Western Arnhem Land Didgeridoos, Part One

  1. A ripping, rich F# made by Billy Yallawonga. We picked this one up at the Katherine Art Gallery.
  2. Another by Billy Yallawonga, a D that we picked up at Manyallaluk, his community which is on Aboriginal land near Katherine.
  3. A C made by George Jungnawangra, purchased in the old days of Clarion Music in San Francisco.
  4. An E made by David Blanasi, given to Randy while the White Cockatoo Ensemble were staying at his house in San Diego in August 1999. This is a great instrument that makes you play it just like its maker would want it to.
  5. A very contemporary instrument made by Lipworrunga, aka Les Huddleston, a mixed descent Aboriginal/Australian living near Darwin. This is a great big sounding E with a gorgeous combination of traditional and contemporary artwork. This one's claim to fame is that Stephen Kent had it on hold for himself for a few weeks at Clarion Music back in '96 or so. It turns out I went to the store later in the day after he finally decided not to buy it. I showed it to him when I met him later that night, and got a bit of a "d'oh!"
